The University’s Arts and Culture Framework guides our decisions and priorities, and it sets out our over-arching ambition for how arts and cultural activity underpins our strategy as a University of Social Purpose.
- Arts & Culture is defined as encompassing aesthetic and creative activity, as well as how we express and explore our connections and lived experiences more broadly as a diverse community.
- Communities may be internal to the University (e.g. our students and staff) or external to it (including local residents and groups).
- Civic Engagement is the University’s contribution to social, economic, and cultural well-being through meaningful collaborations with local communities, public sector bodies and businesses.
- Placemaking involves helping to shape physical and social environments to enhance community identity.
- Student Experience means the overall quality and perception of a student's life and opportunities at University.
- Knowledge Exchange is the sharing of research, ideas, and expertise between universities and those outside academia for mutual benefit.
- Value(s) refers to the University values (Daring, Innovative, Respectful, & Open), as well as to the value of Arts & Culture.
Following extensive consultation with both internal and external communities, the University has created an ambition statement:
Royal Holloway will offer a daring, innovative and high-quality arts and cultural programme that both matters to our audiences, and empowers our students and staff with opportunities to showcase their creativity and develop skills.
We will work with a range of communities to enable diverse individuals and groups to discover, access and enjoy both our campuses and a digital offer. Making meaningful connections locally, regionally and globally, we aim to be recognised as a key cultural partner by civic groups, local educators, cultural institutions and other interested parties.
Through our commitment to social purpose and addressing the challenges of our age, we will advocate for the value of arts, creativity and heritage, attracting external funding for inclusive cultural activities that support education, communicate and share interdisciplinary and practice-led research, exchange knowledge, and enrich health and wellbeing.
