BES is the oldest Learned Society for ecologists in the world, with a Fellowship seen as a mark of professional excellence in the field of ecology.

Professor Koricheva’s research investigates the consequences of biodiversity loss for functioning of ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services.

She mainly works in forest ecosystems and combines an experimental approach with reviews of published literature.

Julia completed her PhD in ecological zoology at the University of Turku, Finland and has been working at Royal Holloway since 2005. Since 1999, she’s led research at the long-term Satakunta forest diversity experiments in Finland.

Julia said: “I am truly honoured to be awarded Fellowship of the British Ecological Society and to join the first cohort of BES Fellows.

“This recognition means a lot as I have been a BES member for most of my scientific career and have a strong affinity with society’s commitment to promoting ecological knowledge and nurturing an equitable collaborative community.”
