Congratulations to the Director of Digital Organisation and Society (DOS) Research Centre and Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the School of Business and Management’s Department of Marketing, Dr Nisreen Ameen, who has been awarded an Innovation Fellowship by The British Academy.

The Innovation Fellowship 2024-25 Route B: Policy-led (Digital Society) will see Nisreen working with Skills England, an analytical and research unit within the Department for Education, to develop a research project around the central topic of ‘AI skills across the UK’, and ties into the government’s commitment to address skills gaps and foster growth.

The project, 'Understanding AI Skills Inequalities in the UK: A Comprehensive Policy Approach – Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skills (DfE)' aims to investigate the root causes of inequalities in AI skills across regional and demographic groups in the UK. Identifying the barriers to AI skills development, the research will explore innovative solutions and strategies to bridge the gaps, while considering international best practices in AI skills policy and lifelong learning for underrepresented groups. Based on these findings, a dynamic policy framework and toolkit will be developed to adapt to AI skills requirements as the technology evolves. This will support policymakers in implementing strategies that provide access to development opportunities, fostering a diverse and highly skilled AI workforce promoting inclusive economic growth.

Following the announcement of the award Dr Nisreen had this to say: ”AI is about more than just innovation—it’s about people, inclusivity, and opportunity. I’m excited to contribute to this national agenda, ensuring the transformative potential of AI benefits everyone.”
