Can we use computational models to understand mental health?
Abstract:
Despite growing awareness of gender inequities and increased initiatives to promote diversity in academia, progress remains slow, and inequalities persist—particularly at senior levels such as professor roles. Gender bias is not a singular issue but a multifaceted challenge that negatively impacts women researchers' careers, work-life balance, and mental health. Implicit gender stereotypes play a central role in perpetuating these disparities, shaping opportunities and experiences in profound ways. Drawing on insights from a collaborative effort with 43 authors across 10 countries, I will discuss the mechanisms driving implicit bias and its far-reaching consequences. Together, we will explore concrete, actionable strategies that individuals, academic institutions, and society can adopt to mitigate these challenges and foster greater equity in academia.
