Partnerships

We have extensive experience in collaborating with companies and organisations. Collaborations can take a variety of forms, which include:

• Consultancy by one or a group of academics.
• Co-funding of PhD studentships to work on topics that are integral to the mid-term goals of our partners.
• Knowledge transfer partnerships to leverage government/EU funding.
• Software development services provided by Code Groovers run by students and staff of the computer science department.
• Tailored training to learn about cutting-edge developments. Staff can also enrol in our part-time or block mode MSc programmes.
• Our Smart Card and IoT Security Centre  works with partners to advance knowledge in this field.

We offer our students the opportunity to spend a "year in industry" as part of their bachelors (BSc) and integrated masters (MSci) degree programmes. Students studying for a BSc take their placement after their second year of studies; MSci students take their placement after their third year. Only students with good academic performance are allowed to go on a placement.

For companies and organisations, hosting a student is an excellent opportunity to recruit highly motivated members for their teams as well as determine whether the students would make suitable long-term hires.

Many of our students have an individual project component as part of their degree. All projects are supervised by an academic member of staff. We are happy for an organisation to suggest a topic provided there is sufficient academic content. 

There are three types of projects:

• Bachelors- approximately 300 hours between October and March
• Masters – approximately 600 hours between June and August  
• Integrated Masters – approximately 600 hours between October and March

We departments of the schools are all active in outreach. We are regularly hosting events at Royal Holloway as well as visiting schools. The mathematics department has a module "Mathematics in the classroom" and selected students visit partner schools regularly.

AstraZeneca.

Our collaboration with AstraZeneca (AZ) has started with the Computer Science Department in 2012 and has included: direct access from the company to the state-of-the-art information; joint participation in an EU project; and AZ directly financing our research.

British Gas/Centrica.

Our relations with British Gas (BG), which have been established for some years on departmental level and gives our undergraduate students the opportunity of summer industry placements for 3 months. There are also  1-year internships and joint MSc and PhD projects which allows BG access to our technology, especially in the field of Big Data.
