English language requirements

English language requirements for international students

All teaching at Royal Holloway (apart from some language courses) is in English. You therefore need to have good enough English to cope with your studies right from the start.

Do I need to provide proof of my English language ability?

If you’re not a national of one of the countries identified by the UK Home Office as majority English-speaking, you’ll need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

If you are a national of one of the following countries, we will not need proof of your English language ability:

Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British overseas territories, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, UK, USA.

How can I provide proof of my English language ability?

You can demonstrate your English language ability by achieving the scores we require in one of the following tests:

  • IELTS (including IELTS indicator)
  • Pearson Test of English
  • Cambridge ESOL
  • TOEFL iBT (including the Special Home Edition)
  • OnCampus Test of English (OCTOE)
  • Duolingo English Test
  • Language Cert
  • Kaplan Test of English

Our required scores vary depending on the language demands of the subject you wish to study. The specific scores needed for each subject are listed below.

Your language test certificate must have been issued no more than two years before the start of your course.

You may also be able to demonstrate your English language ability if you have completed at least one year of study at bachelor’s level or above at a university in one of the majority English speaking countries listed above.

Royal Holloway reserves the right in individual cases to request additional evidence of your language ability.

Does my English language qualification need to be a SELT?

A SELT is a Secure English Language Test that is acceptable for UK immigration purposes. It has to be taken at an approved centre.

Your IELTS qualification must be a SELT if one of your IELTS subscores is below 5.5 and you are:

  • Applying for one of our Pre-sessional English Language Programmes with IELTS.
  • Eligible for a linked Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) covering both your degree and your pre-sessional English language programme.

If you are joining us for a pre-sessional English language programme, we can issue a linked CAS only if your IELTS score is above 5.5 and you have met the academic conditions of your main degree offer.

Please note that TOEFL iBT cannot be used as a SELT.

What are the English language requirements for Postgraduate Research degrees?

All Postgraduate Research degrees (i.e. PhD and Masters by Research) require:

  • IELTS: 6.5 overall. Writing 7.0. No other subscore lower than 5.5.
  • Pearson Test of English: 61 overall. Writing 69. No other subscore lower than 51.
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English (ISE): ISE III.
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) grade C.
  • TOEFL iBT: 88 overall, with Reading 18 Listening 17 Speaking 20 Writing 26.
  • Duolingo: 120 overall, 135 in Literacy, 135 in Production and no sub-score below 100.

What programmes are available to help me prepare for university study?

International students who do not meet the English language requirements for an undergraduate course can apply for a preparation programme at the Royal Holloway International Study Centre. Once this has been completed, students can progress to study the degree of their choice at Royal Holloway, University of London.
