RHUL Design Technician has been working on an impressive new project.
Nicola Hewitt-George, Design Technician in the Department of Drama, Theatre & Dance, has been working with RHUL students, colleagues and alumni on a major new site-responsive production of Far Away by Caryl Churchill at Ambika P3, University of Westminster, as part of the Camden Fringe.
Nicola was responsible for designing, making and installing the sets, costumes and hats for the production which features 22 characters, over 20 hats, and locations ranging from rural domestic scenes, to hat making factories and prisoner parades.
Nicola says:
It's been an incredible experience designing for this amazing space which, being a subterranean former concrete testing hall, has been quite a logistical challenge at times (we've had to have busy central London streets shut down to crane in deliveries of set) but equally exciting in finding the intersections between space (Ambika P3) and place (Far Away). I worked closely with my technical colleagues in figuring out the logistics of how best to build and install the set, and the set and costumes were built in our brilliant workshops with technical support and student assistants. I try to work as sustainably as possible when designing, and utilised the drama departments stock of scenic items and props for scenic construction and dressing.
The project has recently received a five-star review from Plays International.
