Royal Holloway’s two quadrangles have recently been awarded second place in a ranking of UK university quads on Wohkhe, the higher education policy discussion site.
In his ranking, article author Paul Greatrix cites Nikolaus Pevsner's description of the University's Founder’s Building as being “the most ebullient Victorian building in the Home Counties”.
The spectacular Grade 1 listed building, founded by entrepreneur Thomas Holloway was opened in 1886 as a College for women. The north quad is home to a statue of Queen Victoria, who bestowed the title “Royal” to Holloway’s College, while the south quad statue depicts founder Thomas Holloway, with his wife Jane.
The quads continue to be a popular venue for events, receptions, weddings, BBQs, filming and more.
